Bo Bartlett made this painting, Longshoremen, with oils, and right away, I'm struck by how the colours and the surface create a sense of watching something unfold rather than presenting a complete picture. It’s fascinating how Bartlett’s brushwork dances between detailed realism and blurry uncertainty. The faces in the foreground are rendered with such clarity, yet they seem to fade into the hazy, almost dreamlike background of shipping containers and towering cranes. Look at the way Bartlett handles the light on the older man’s face, each stroke seems to model the planes and volumes so precisely, but the rest of the figure remains somehow lost in shadow, almost dissolving into the atmosphere. This reminds me of Luc Tuymans and his way of using muted colors to make paintings that feel both familiar and distant. Like Tuymans, Bartlett’s work reminds us that painting isn’t about perfect representation, but about opening up spaces for ambiguity and multiple readings.
