Octavio Ocampo created this painting, Calvary, using his signature style of metamorphic painting, in which numerous images compose one larger image. The painting depicts the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, an image deeply embedded in Western culture and religious belief. Ocampo, growing up in a deeply Catholic Mexico, would have been surrounded by such imagery. Yet, his artistic choice to embed the face of a sorrowful woman into the scene, her eyes formed by the clouds and landscape, complicates the traditional narrative. Is this Mary, the mother of Jesus, or perhaps Mary Magdalene, a devoted follower? The painting invites us to consider the perspectives and experiences of the women present at the crucifixion, often marginalized in historical accounts.
