Henry Wessel made this photograph, Real Estate #90922, with film and a camera. I can imagine him standing on the street thinking about what makes a home a home. This house is a modest one and is giving me quiet vibes, like an Edward Hopper painting. The color is really working, that soft yellow feels like warm sunshine and a simpler time. I wonder if Wessel felt a sense of calm when he took this picture? I like the composition. The house is smack in the middle of the frame, like it is not trying to hide itself. I’m thinking about other photographers like Stephen Shore and how they looked at the everyday with a fresh gaze. Each of them, in their own way, made the ordinary sing. They captured the mundane and made it beautiful. Artists are always in conversation. They feed off each other's ideas, remixing and reinventing. And that is what makes art so exciting, that constant exchange, a never-ending game of telephone.
