Gazmend Freitag made this small but mighty square painting, Seerosen, with oils probably sometime last year, as the painting is signed and dated 2022. There is a flurry of brushstrokes, some confident jabs of leafy green, others more tentative, especially where the light hits the pink and white waterlilies. The paint is dabbed on pretty thickly, especially in the flowers, giving them an almost three-dimensional presence. You can almost feel the texture! I wonder what Freitag was thinking when he made this? Was he trying to capture a fleeting moment of beauty, or was he more interested in the act of painting itself, the way the colors interact and the forms emerge from the chaos of the brushstrokes? I see a bit of Monet in there, and I wonder who else has inspired him? It's like artists are always having this ongoing conversation across time. We see each other and exchange ideas, and that's how creativity grows.
