Andrei Rublev painted this image of Sabbas the Sanctified as part of "The Last Judgement" in the Assumption Cathedral in Vladimir, Russia, using fresco techniques. Fresco is a demanding medium: pigments are applied to wet plaster, binding them chemically as it dries. The luminous effect you see results from this process. But look closely, and you will see it is also a fragile one. Over centuries, the fresco has degraded, adding a layer of texture like the craquelure on an old master painting.
