Bubble by Harold Edgerton

Dimensions 32.7 x 23 cm (12 7/8 x 9 1/16 in.)

Editor: So this is Harold Edgerton’s "Bubble," and there's no creation date, but it gives off this cosmic, otherworldly feel. How do you interpret this image? Curator: I see Edgerton using technology – specifically, stroboscopic photography – to dissect a fleeting moment, to analyze and present the material reality of something typically unseen. What socio-economic factors enabled such specialized equipment to exist and be utilized for artistic, rather than purely scientific, exploration? Editor: That's interesting! It never occurred to me to think about the economics of capturing something so simple. Curator: Precisely. Edgerton blurs the line between scientific documentation and aesthetic representation. The "how" is paramount.
