Lugar furtivo 1996

Gunther Gerzso made this painting, Lugar furtivo, with geometric forms and layers of oil paint, though we don’t know exactly when. I find myself drawn to the way Gerzso builds up the surface, almost like constructing a wall or a landscape. The colors are earthy, and the textures vary from smooth planes to mottled grounds. There's a section on the left where rectangles and squares stack up, creating a sense of depth and shadow. The greens and blues here remind me of looking into a cool, still pond. Then, the textured section on the right feels more ambiguous. It’s as if Gerzso is inviting us into a space that's both familiar and unknown. The painting echoes the formalist concerns of someone like Josef Albers, while pushing it into more organic territory. It’s the kind of painting that keeps revealing new things the longer you look at it.
