Curatorial notes

This page of Studies van duiven was made by Carel Adolph Lion Cachet, but when exactly, we don't know. There's a freedom to this work, isn't there? It's all line, just the bare minimum needed to conjure a bird. Look at the top left – the pigeon taking off. It's just a few lines, but you get the sense of movement, the upward thrust. Cachet isn't trying to capture every detail; he's going for the essence, the gesture. I love how the paper peeks through. It’s not about hiding the process, but embracing it. It reminds me of Matisse, who always said drawing was like taking a line for a walk. It's like Cachet is thinking aloud with his pen, letting the line lead him where it may. The whole page feels alive, a flurry of feathers and potential.
