Tadeusz Makowski brushed this scene into being with thin washes of colour and decisive marks. I imagine him thinking about the Old Masters, as he’s working, but shaking them up with something fresh, something modern. The composition, dominated by cool blues and greens, gives way to pinks, oranges and earthy browns that add warmth, creating a sense of depth and mystery. You can see how the paint is applied in layers, each stroke building upon the last. It reminds me of Cezanne. The pink lines create a kind of cartoonish, modern edge. Those fluid marks describing the figures – they're not just outlines, they’re alive! Like a dance across the surface, full of energy. Makowski lets the paint do its thing, embracing imperfection and the unexpected. Artists are always talking to each other, riffing on what came before, so each painting becomes part of this ongoing conversation about how we see and feel the world. And it’s up to us to keep that conversation going.
