Curatorial notes
This landscape is an etching by James Ensor, an artist from Belgium who lived from 1860 to 1949. As a Belgian artist, Ensor was part of a generation grappling with industrialization and its effects on the landscape and society. The stark simplicity of the trees contrasted with the buildings captures a sense of isolation, but is tempered by the wide field and ample sky. Ensor was an innovator in printmaking, using etching to create a sense of light and atmosphere. His style and subject matter place him in a complex relationship with the art world of his time. "To be eccentric, or to be remarkable, is a misfortune" said Ensor. While appearing traditional at first glance, Ensor’s approach was unconventional, paving the way for later expressionist movements. This particular piece illustrates Ensor’s deep connection to the countryside in a time of upheaval.
