Lodewijk van de Winkel made this photograph of an exhibition of Odilon Redon's work in Rotterdam in 1907. I’m struck by its quiet mood and how the monochrome palette sets a contemplative tone. It really captures a specific moment in time. There's a sense of depth created by the doorway, pulling our eye further into the space, like a stage set waiting for its players. The textures, though muted, add a tangible quality. Look at the walls, and the sheen on the furniture, contrasted with the art hanging on the walls. The way the pieces are displayed, casually propped against the wall or hung from picture rails, feels almost intimate. Notice the small round sofa in the foreground, like a comfy spot from which to contemplate the art. The image reminds me a bit of the interiors captured by Vilhelm Hammershøi, both artists use a similar approach. Ultimately, this photo invites us to reflect on art, space, and the act of looking itself.
