This sepia photograph, by A. Rosenzvaig, probably in Paris, captures an unknown child perched in a staged bird’s nest. I can imagine the photographer fussing around with the props, trying to create a scene both natural and surreal. That little kid, plonked right in the middle of this manufactured nature! Maybe they were giggling, maybe a little scared, or maybe just bored, wondering when it would be over. The surface of the print, now faded, has a dreamy, almost ghostly quality, which adds to the mystery. The sepia tone flattens the image, yet it also seems to warm the scene, giving it a nostalgic glow. It's a reminder of the many forgotten faces, lives once lived, now filtered through the lens of time and art. And isn’t art just that, capturing a moment and letting it fly?
