Saint Maclou, Rouen by Louis Jules Adeline

Saint Maclou, Rouen c. 19th century

Editor: This is Louis Jules Adeline’s "Saint Maclou, Rouen," an etching depicting the Gothic church. There's such incredible detail in the facade. What catches your eye when you look at this print? Curator: Well, I'm transported. It’s like a dream, isn't it? Adeline's delicate lines capture the church's grandeur, but also, perhaps unintentionally, its fragility. It reminds me that beauty, like faith, requires constant tending, or it fades. The cross atop the spire is the cherry on top, don't you think? Editor: I never thought about the "fragility" aspect before. Curator: Perhaps I'm projecting. Isn't that what art is for? Editor: That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the insight! Curator: My pleasure. I always enjoy these chats.
