Here in the Städel Museum is Albert Hendschel's "Bekränzung eines Künstlers, unterhalb viel Volk", made using pen and watercolour. The arched composition and muted colours create a whimsical, celebratory atmosphere. Hendschel has constructed an elaborate visual staging. An artist kneels before a seated woman who is crowning him with laurel. Below, a crowd of figures, seemingly in a state of jovial chaos. Note the dynamic lines and varied gestures that create a sense of movement and energy. The characters are arranged in an almost theatrical manner; the artist seems to be exploring themes of recognition, community and the social role of the artist. The structure of the artwork encourages us to consider the relationship between the individual and the collective, the solemnity of honour and the exuberance of celebration.
