Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande created this evocative etching of the Rietlanden, capturing a moment of serene maritime life. At first glance, the sailing ships evoke a sense of freedom and exploration, symbols deeply rooted in Dutch history and cultural identity. Yet, these vessels, reminiscent of those found in ancient seafaring traditions, carry more than just cargo. We find a similar longing for the open sea in Roman frescoes, where ships represented journeys of both literal and metaphorical kinds. Here, the ships appear on the horizon, a symbol of hope.
