Editor: This undated drawing, by Elizabeth Rigby, shows two figures in what appears to be classical garb. There's a definite sense of theatricality. What cultural echoes do you hear when you look at this piece? Curator: The costuming certainly evokes classical antiquity. Observe the standing figure's staff. It is a visual marker of authority. What does it suggest to you? Editor: Power, perhaps? Or guidance? Curator: Exactly. Note also the placement of the figures. The standing figure oversees the seated one, whose open palm presents a posture of supplication. This creates a visual narrative of dominance and dependency. Do you find any evidence of those symbolic postures elsewhere? Editor: The landscape itself seems to rise and fall in accordance to the figures, doesn't it? Curator: Precisely. The natural world underscores their relationship. We are looking at a staged narrative, one rife with visual cues. Editor: I see it now. Thank you! Curator: My pleasure. This has been a revealing exploration for me as well.
