Editor: So, this print, "Vrouwelijk naakt bij venster," or "Female Nude by Window" created by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita around 1920, is really striking. The stark contrast of the black ink and the positioning of the nude figure gives it a very… dramatic, almost confrontational feel. What jumps out at you? Curator: It's that window, isn't it? Not so much a window as a frame, trapping the viewer as much as the nude within. It's claustrophobic, powerful... I imagine de Mesquita felt similarly confined by tradition, or perhaps even by the expectations of the burgeoning art world. Does she look empowered to you? To me, she appears more like an unwilling participant, like a trapped actress on stage. Perhaps the title is deceptive. Do you sense some subversion, some questioning, beyond the straightforward representation of the female form? Editor: I see what you mean. The way the lines create texture on her body does almost make her look trapped or caged, rather than free. It almost gives the idea of a woodcut, a very linear form. Curator: Exactly! Think about the art nouveau movement at the time and its decorative lines and organic shapes, and de Mesquita’s take on modernism! The lines create light and shadow. He plays with a modern sensibility by referencing old art and forms while creating an aesthetic that also suggests this sense of, I would say, being stuck, but also defiant by presenting it so overtly. What does that act of showing something do for how we think of nudity now? Editor: It kind of makes you think about how even presenting something, maybe, liberates you from feeling trapped? Seeing this today kind of frees me from any of those concerns by seeing it represented in something so... permanent. Curator: That's wonderfully insightful, connecting the permanence of the artwork to the potentially transient feeling of being "stuck". It makes you wonder what kind of a legacy we want to create from our own internal cages. Editor: Yeah! It almost makes the process more powerful by viewing it! Thanks for this point of view!
