Hans Daucher created this small, circular bronze medal of Philipp of Pfalz-Neuburg sometime in the early 16th century. Daucher, working in the midst of the Renaissance, produced this medal to commemorate the Count Palatine during a time when Humanism was impacting the political, cultural, and artistic conventions in Bavaria. The medal presents Philipp in profile, armored, surrounded by dense ornamentation, and inscriptions denoting his titles. As a member of the ruling elite, Philipp’s identity was tied to his lineage, military prowess, and noble status; all aspects are carefully communicated through the symbolism and imagery of the medal. The armor represents not only his social standing but also his role as a protector and leader. The choice of bronze, a material often associated with strength and permanence, further reinforces these qualities. This medal is a fascinating window into the construction of identity and power during the Renaissance, reflecting both the personal attributes of Philipp and the broader societal values of his time.
