These Studies for “The Last Judgement” were made by Michelangelo using traditional drawing materials: paper and pencil. The sheet is filled with rapidly sketched figures, studies of arms, legs, faces and groupings of figures. Michelangelo used the paper to experiment with the composition and anatomy of the figures for his fresco of the Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel. The pencil marks are light and delicate, but they convey a sense of power and dynamism. The figures are muscular and expressive, and they seem to be caught in a moment of intense emotion. These drawings are a testament to Michelangelo's skill as a draughtsman, and they offer a glimpse into his creative process, and the amount of work involved in the production of a fresco of that scale. The drawings also speak to the role of labor in the creation of art. Michelangelo was a highly skilled artist, and he spent countless hours honing his craft, using his intellectual and physical skills in tandem. Ultimately, we can reflect on the value of drawing and the ways in which Michelangelo blurred the lines between art, labor, and devotion.
