Eugen Siegler made this print of a street in Stuttgart, using etching, a way of drawing with acid on metal. It’s all about the line, isn't it? Look at how Siegler creates depth with these lines, guiding your eye down the sloping street. Each stroke feels deliberate, almost architectural in its precision. The buildings lean in, heavy with detail. Notice that area in the lower left. The cross hatching is intense, building up a shadow. He seems to relish in these dense marks, drawing the eye in. There's a real sense of process here, an embrace of the medium. Siegler's work reminds me a bit of Piranesi, with that similar love of architectural detail, and also a slightly surreal sense of space. It's a print that keeps you looking, finding new things with each pass.
