Antoon Derkinderen created this study, an apparent inventory of scientific instruments and figures, using graphite on paper. The immediate impression is one of provisionality: graphite is a readily erasable medium, and the composition of this work suggests that it was always intended as a starting point. The paper itself shows signs of wear, with smudges and creases that speak to its use as a functional, rather than precious, surface. This quality is underscored by Derkinderen's chosen medium, and suggests a prioritization of practicality over artistic grandstanding. Derkinderen's rapid script lends an immediacy to the depicted subject. From ship parts like 'anker' to measuring tools like 'barometer' and names of scientists, the work gives us insight into the world of trade and exploration, with lists of instruments and names appearing to be grouped together for ease of access. This study emphasizes the importance of making in its own right. Derkinderen created it as a means to an end, not necessarily for the sake of the end itself. The work also shows us that the value of art need not be defined by its materials or technical virtuosity; it can also reside in the ideas and processes it represents.
