Isaac Israels made this sketch of a baby in a stroller and the head of a boy, we don't know when and where, but we can imagine it must have been quickly made on location, maybe in a park. The drawing is all about these sketchy marks. The artist uses charcoal to create these delicate smudges and scribbles to construct the image of the baby, the buggy, the boy. See how the dark tones render the soft chubby face and the folds of the child’s garment. I can imagine Israels wanting to capture the fleeting beauty and innocence of childhood, and probably being inspired by other artists of his time. Like him, we are all in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. I love this embodied expression, which embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations.
