Editor: We’re looking at "Portrait of Joseph Adolf Lodewijk Frans Steffens," an 1872 engraving by Carel Christiaan Antony Last. It's housed here at the Rijksmuseum. The starkness of the print really draws my eye to the sitter’s face. What elements of composition or form stand out to you in this work? Curator: Certainly, the artist’s command of line and value is striking. Note how the subtle gradations of tone, achieved through meticulous engraving, create volume and texture. Observe, also, the careful arrangement of light and shadow—the chiaroscuro—that models Steffens’s face. Does the treatment of light, its distribution and intensity, convey a sense of interiority? Editor: Yes, definitely. The light seems concentrated on his face, and a little diffused as it goes down his torso. Is this focus just a way to highlight him or does it communicate something about him? Curator: The artist's choice to soften the background and concentrate the contrast around the face does guide our vision. The crisp lines against softer backgrounds isolate the sitter’s features and seem to underscore the contours of his head, creating an almost sculptural quality. Also, examine the relationship between the figure and the surrounding space. How does the composition emphasize Steffens' presence or project some psychological essence? Editor: It’s almost as though he's emerging from the darkness, presenting himself to us. I guess the way that light and shadow are employed definitely sculpt his figure and help emphasize the subject in the piece. Curator: Precisely. And focusing our attention there reveals the piece’s essence. Now, what does your analysis uncover? Editor: Thinking about the piece's essence rather than just historical information really opened up new perspective for me. I learned how the formal components interplay with the artist's intentions.
