Friedrich Olivier made this watercolor and pen drawing, Fighting Horsemen, in 1818. It depicts two men on horseback engaged in combat, their turbans identifying them as figures from the Ottoman Empire. The image offers insight into early 19th century European Orientalism, in which artists exoticized and often fantasized about the cultures of the Middle East. Germany, where Olivier was from, had a complex relationship with the Ottoman Empire, marked by both admiration and fear. The drawing presents an idealized vision of Ottoman warriors, emphasizing their martial skill and exotic attire. It can be contrasted with the political realities of the time, as European powers competed for influence in the weakening Ottoman Empire. Examining Olivier's biography, travel accounts, and political cartoons from the period allows us to understand the historical and cultural context that shaped his artistic choices. Doing so helps to situate this work not simply as a depiction of fighting horsemen, but as a document reflecting Europe's evolving relationship with the Eastern world.
