This print of Daniel Tanner was produced by Peter Troschel in 17th century Germany, with etching. The work presents us with a stern looking man in a ruff. Tanner, as it says above the portrait, was an esteemed preacher. Below the image, a biblical quote from Psalm 71:9-O "Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth." In the context of the Reformation, which divided Europe the image reads as a statement on the importance of spiritual guidance in times of change. The print may have been commissioned by the church as propaganda, or by Tanner himself as a way to assert his authority. Either way, it serves as a reminder of the power of religious institutions in shaping public life. By examining historical documents, such as church records and personal letters, we can gain a deeper understanding of the complex social forces that shaped the production and reception of this image.
