George Hendrik Breitner made this study, possibly of a figure in a landscape, with pencil on paper. Breitner was working in the Netherlands during a period of rapid social and technological change that profoundly affected the art world. Breitner here presents us with just the barest sketch of a figure in a landscape. While not much to look at as a finished artwork, it gives us a glimpse into the artist’s working process. Breitner made countless studies to help him compose larger paintings. What interests me most about this work is that it gives us a glimpse into the nuts and bolts of the art world. The Rijksmuseum holds this drawing today. This piece is archived and made available for viewing as part of a larger institutional practice. What other drawings by Breitner can you find in museum collections?
