This figure, made by an Igala artist, is rendered in terracotta, a low-fired ceramic clay, adorned with a necklace of organic material. Terracotta is inextricably linked to the earth from which it's sourced, demanding a maker skilled in the art of extraction, preparation and modeling. The Igala artist has skillfully formed a seated figure with distinct facial features and a regal bearing. White pigment highlights the face, drawing attention to the serene expression. This aesthetic choice, combined with the figure's posture, emphasizes the importance of calm and introspection. The tools in each hand might be associated with leadership or specific tasks within the community. The making of terracotta objects extends beyond mere craftsmanship; it encompasses a deep understanding of the material and its cultural significance. Appreciating this piece means recognizing the essential role of materials, process, and cultural context in giving an artwork its full meaning.

Even though we don’t fully know (yet) what ethnic group this Nigerian figure comes from, or what precise ritual function it fulfilled, we can appreciate its power and beauty. A man holds badges of authority: a fan and a staff or tusk. His face is white after repeated ritual application of pigment, and he wears a necklace of valuable cowrie shells that have become brown over time. He is seated on a simple stool, sculpted on top of an elaborately carved stool that is supported by small figures. The surface of the entire sculpture has a crust formed by decades of ritual offerings.
