Bernhard Strigel painted this small panel with oil on wood, sometime in the early 16th century. The result is a heraldic emblem, full of symbolic force. The process of oil painting allowed Strigel to build up layers of color and detail, notice the painstaking depiction of the unicorn’s flowing mane, the meticulously rendered helmet. The black and white palette creates a stark contrast against the red ground, emphasizing the family’s power, and its ability to commission high-quality work. Such heraldry served a clear social function: to declare a family’s status. But it also reflects a moment when those in power were beginning to find new ways to express their status, beyond traditional forms of wealth. This painting stands as a testament to the enduring power of craft, to imbue materials with cultural significance.
