This is a photograph of Ayse Erkmen’s installation, called The House. The image captures a room flooded with light. Not just from the windows, which give way to a lush green exterior, but also these curious, horizontal light fixtures suspended in the middle of the room. I love how the light from the work bounces off the herringbone floor. I can imagine Erkmen, carefully plotting the placement of each light, considering how it interacts with the existing architecture. There is a playful dialogue here: Erkmen takes something cold like industrial lighting and uses it to amplify the room's warmth. In a way she is painting with light and space. It’s a game of inside/outside, natural/artificial, and Erkmen invites us to play along too. This dialogue between artists across time—using similar materials, like light and colour to convey a mood or feeling, is what it is all about. What do you think?
