Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande made this painting of a view from the Inselhotel on Lake Constance with watercolor on paper. Look at the green of the trees, and the blue of the water - it’s a broken color, made with hatched marks. You can see the hand of the artist. I can almost feel the breeze and hear the lapping of the lake against the shore. I wonder what Storm van 's-Gravesande was thinking as he made the painting? Maybe he had a lovely day in the sun and wanted to capture that moment. What I love about the painting is how it describes the experience of being there, looking out at the water, seeing the reflected light. He uses thin layers of paint to build up color and texture. Notice the way the strokes of the brush create movement and depth. The painting resonates with other landscape painters like Monet and Pissarro. Artists are constantly having conversations with one another, across time and place. They explore different ways of seeing and experiencing the world. Each mark is like a little spark of inspiration.
