Sadamasa Motonaga created this artwork, Sakuhin, which translates to ‘Artwork’ in Japanese, using oil on canvas. Two dominant, rounded black forms occupy the foreground, challenging our perception of space, as they appear both flat and dimensional. Notice the contrast with the background where vibrant pools of color intermingle, creating a sense of depth, in contrast to the opaque black shapes in the foreground. This juxtaposition destabilizes traditional figure-ground relationships, inviting us to question fixed perspectives. From the top form, rivulets of blue, red and white paint cascade downwards, suggesting movement and fluidity. Motonaga was a key member of the Gutai Art Association, whose work disrupted conventional art practices. The poured paint defies traditional notions of control and intention, suggesting a semiotic play between chance and design. This work embodies the Gutai spirit of experimentation. It emphasizes the material properties of paint and also invites ongoing interpretation.
