This jug still bank was handmade by an anonymous artist; you can see it here at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The rich, reddish-brown stain gives it a warm, inviting glow. You can practically feel the texture of the wood grain—evidence of a caring hand and thoughtful process. I’m struck by the horizontal slice that forms the coin slot, a simple yet poignant gesture. This careful carving, so directly bisecting the vessel, is a material indication of the function of this object: its usefulness, its purpose. Does the darkness of the slit evoke a sort of longing for what it contains? Does it remind us of what we might have? This piece reminds me of the woodblock prints of Félix Vallotton, who also used these blocks of wood to create powerful and lasting images. So much can be achieved with such a simple medium. Ultimately, this little bank embodies a unique, quiet beauty and invites our own reflection.
