Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo created this print called 'Angel with Scapular' using etching. Tiepolo, son of the famous Rococo painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, worked during the 18th century, a time of enormous social change and revolution. This piece visualizes divine intervention. We see an angel, descending from the heavens to offer salvation to figures in distress. The angel extends a scapular, a symbol of protection. The people are shown with dark skin, their suffering emphasized by their desperate gestures. The print highlights the themes of faith, hope, and deliverance, but also brings forth questions about power, privilege, and the dynamics of salvation. Who gets saved, and why? The image raises an emotional and poignant reflection on the experience of those who have been historically marginalized. The piece serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between faith, identity, and history.
