Curator: Thomas Daniell's "Idgah at Amroha" presents us with a view of a Muslim prayer ground in India. Editor: It's striking how the architecture seems almost secondary to the engulfing landscape; the way the trees frame it gives a sense of romantic grandeur. Curator: Indeed, the Idgah as a symbol functions in a liminal space, marking both sacred ground and a point of social gathering, further emphasized by its being absorbed into the land. Editor: And that white structure contrasted against the earthy tones draws the eye; I wonder about the labor involved in sourcing those materials, and the political power such construction projects signified. Curator: The pure white against the green symbolizes purity, but also perhaps a British desire for order and clarity in a landscape they perceived as chaotic. Editor: I hadn’t considered the colonial gaze implicit in the framing. It's interesting how our understanding of materiality and symbolism intertwine here. Curator: Absolutely, the painting reveals multiple layers of cultural memory and interpretation. Editor: A blend of serene beauty and complex histories made visible, something to keep in mind as we move on.

Amroha lies to the east of Delhi in the north of India. While travelling through the country, Thomas Daniell visited this idgah, an enclosure where prayers are held during Muslim festivals. Daniell’s composition presents the Indian landscape according to European artistic traditions. This made a foreign landscape familiar and appealing to British eyes. It is a picturesque scene, an ideal type of landscape. Trees on either side of the building create a sense of balance. The shadows in the foreground and bright daylight in the middle ground bring attention to Daniell’s focal point, the idgah. Gallery label, April 2023
