Editor: So this is "Miss Corti, from the Actresses series," printed in 1889 by Wm. S. Kimball & Co. It looks like a hand-printed image on toned paper. What I find interesting is that it has the same aesthetic as pencil or charcoal drawing. It’s quite small, and the figure looks melancholic to me, but I am not sure why. What do you see in this piece? Curator: This piece operates on several levels, referencing imagery and aspirations of the era. On one hand, it seems to depict Miss Corti as a symbol of innocence and beauty, staged upon a swing, an object heavily loaded with suggestions of playful youth. Note how her slightly melancholic expression invites viewers to project their desires onto her. But it’s more complex than just simple admiration. Does her demure pose contradict or enhance the appeal? Editor: I see what you mean. Her expression feels carefully constructed, but it does also have a vulnerability. So, who exactly was Miss Corti and what does this cigarette card tell us about society at the time? Curator: These actress cards were incredibly popular, offering glimpses into the glamorous world of theater. Miss Corti, one actress among many, would have represented ideals of femininity and celebrity to the general public. Think of it: Tobacco companies distributed daydreams along with their cigarettes. Doesn't that thought offer its own commentary on late 19th-century desires and the nascent marketing industry? Editor: Definitely, it puts a completely different spin on it. Now that you point that out, it is obvious that what appears innocent could be very much charged! Thanks. Curator: My pleasure. Remembering these objects are layered with meaning lets us to unravel deeper narratives and unspoken aspirations embedded in them.
