Henri de Rothschild captured this bombed village with a church and cemetery in the Dolomites with photography. It's almost monochrome, and the sepia tones are like time itself has been washed over the image. Looking at this picture, I imagine what it must have been like to be there, amid such destruction and desolation. The rubble and the mountains surrounding the church remind me of the fragility of life, as if the whole place is about to collapse. I wonder if Rothschild saw this scene as a canvas, too. I bet the way the light falls on the rubble, and the jagged edges of the buildings, almost like brushstrokes. And the silence of the church, a stark contrast to the chaos around it. It makes me think about how we find beauty in the unexpected, even in the face of tragedy.
