This photograph, Een van de deelnemers aan de RTC: de heer E. Jonckheer, was created by Particam, but it’s unclear exactly when. What strikes me about this image is the way the light is used to create subtle gradations of tone, almost like a pencil drawing. The composition is so traditional, but there's a casualness, too. Look at his left hand, resting on the table – there's a softness to the hand, and the way the light catches the edge of the table. The way he's not quite looking at the camera - it's like a fleeting moment caught in time. It's so interesting how the photographer has really leant into the textures of the fabric. The pinstripes of the suit, the floral pattern on the chair, the tablecloth - they all add a sense of depth and tactility to the image. It reminds me a little bit of Gerhard Richter's blurred portraits, in the way that it captures a sense of time passing and the elusiveness of memory. It’s a reminder that photography, like painting, is always an interpretation, not just a record, of reality.
