Editor: Here we have an intriguing sketch from the British School, dated 1809. It depicts a woman with a basket, rendered in delicate pencil strokes. I find her expression quite enigmatic. What do you make of her, and the story the artist is trying to tell? Curator: There's a quiet dignity to her, wouldn't you agree? I imagine her as a market vendor, perhaps, her basket filled with wares. Notice the artist’s attention to detail in her somewhat peculiar hat! It tells us much about the fashion of the time, but I think it also hints at her individuality. What do you think she's selling? Editor: Maybe flowers? Or bread? I hadn't considered the hat as a marker of individuality. I was too focused on her somewhat severe expression! Curator: Ah, but that’s the joy of art, isn’t it? We each bring our own basket of perceptions! Editor: Absolutely. I'll never look at a hat the same way again!
