Peter Becker made this 'Bouquet of Wild Roses' using graphite on paper. The apparent simplicity of the materials belies the complexity of the image, and indeed of the artistic practices of the time. Notice the light and shadow on each of the petals, suggesting the use of close observation and shading. The drawing is incredibly detailed, with layer upon layer of fine marks building to create convincing forms. The natural world was considered a very serious subject of study in the 19th century, and this drawing reflects that, combining scientific interest with artistic intention. Becker, a mid-nineteenth century artist, clearly had a deep understanding of the inherent qualities of the material. In choosing this medium, there is a delicacy, and perhaps also a tacit acknowledgement of the hierarchies of the art world. Was this a study for a larger painting, or a finished work in itself? Ultimately, this detailed drawing speaks to a moment in history when close looking and careful hand work were highly valued skills.
