Exterior of a Great Mausoleum c. 19th century
Dimensions plate: 26 x 38 cm (10 1/4 x 14 15/16 in.)
Editor: This is Domenico Amici's "Exterior of a Great Mausoleum." It's a print of some kind. All those steps make me wonder about the labor it took to build such a place. What can you tell me about this work? Curator: Consider the materiality – the stone, the ink, the paper. How does the act of reproducing this grand structure as a print democratize or alter its significance, and how does this relate to consumption? Editor: So, the print makes the mausoleum more accessible, less elite? Curator: Precisely. Its function shifts. We see a monument replicated, re-presented, and consumed as an image. Editor: That’s a great point. I’ll definitely remember that. Curator: And I will remember to think about labor beyond just the image!
