This photograph of Toren van de Grote of Sint-Nicolaaskerk te Elburg, was made anonymously, and at some point taken in trust by Monumentenzorg. It’s a rather pallid affair, as the whole thing is awash with one shade of light brown. I can't help but wonder what it must have been like to be the one who took this photograph. What were they thinking as they were composing this shot? The flat front of the building on the left looks out of kilter with the angle of the tower on the right, creating some weird tension across the frame. It feels like a study in contrasts, like Jasper Johns using encaustic on canvas to build up layers of meaning. It's not just about capturing a scene, but about exploring the relationship between space, form, and representation. The photograph is a conversation with the architecture, with the act of seeing, and with the very idea of permanence. I like to think the artist's working through this, in their own way.
