Louis-Oscar Roty created this bronze plaquette to commemorate Dr. Leon Gosselin, who died in 1887. This piece exists within a tradition of memorial art, but it also participates in a moment of celebrating the achievements of men within the scientific community. Gosselin's identity is clearly articulated through the inscription, which lists his titles and affiliations, highlighting his importance as President of the Academy of Sciences. Roty’s choice to depict Gosselin in profile lends a sense of formality and authority, reminiscent of classical portraiture. The sculpture captures his likeness, but also something of his character. We can consider how Dr. Leon Gosselin contributed to the political construction of scientific knowledge in France, in the late 19th century. Ultimately, the plaquette serves not only as a tribute to Gosselin's life and work, but also as a reflection of the values and priorities of the society in which he lived.
