"Buffetkast en kast" presents two furniture designs by Léon Laroche. The designs reflect a time when domestic spaces were curated to express status and taste. Laroche's designs speak to the rise of the middle class and their aspirations. Both pieces, a sideboard and a buffet, are adorned with elaborate carvings. These designs offer insight into the values of the time, as gender roles dictated women were in charge of maintaining the home. This made household furnishings significant markers of identity and social standing. By looking at the emotional significance of domestic spaces and the objects within them, we can begin to understand how traditional representations of home life are maintained and challenged. Ultimately, this image of furniture extends beyond mere objects. It encapsulates the dreams, aspirations, and societal expectations of a rapidly changing world.
