Erve Wijsmuller's "Verschillende voorstellingen" presents us with a collection of illustrations of everyday life. Though we don’t know precisely when it was made, it provides a window into the social attitudes of its time. Each vignette seems to capture a different slice of Dutch society, from games children play to social interactions between people from different cultures. These are simple pen and ink drawings, yet they speak volumes about the complex layers of identity, class, and cultural dynamics within Dutch society. Do you notice how some scenes hint at social hierarchies, while others focus on community? Wijsmuller invites us to reflect on what it means to live in a society marked by both unity and division. It’s a delicate, sometimes humorous, and yet thought-provoking study of the human condition.
