Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin made "Still Life with an Ashtray" with oil paint. It’s the kind of painting that makes you wonder what the artist was thinking. Was he just bored? Or was there something more he wanted to say? I love the way the dark colours create a sombre mood, but there’s also something playful about the composition. He’s pushing and pulling, the dark forms hovering between abstraction and representation. I imagine him squinting, stepping back, tilting his head, and then, bam, laying down another layer of paint, trying to capture something elusive. It’s cool to see how he deals with the play of light and shadow, the way the ashtray reflects the light. And the painting itself has a kind of glow, a soft light that makes the whole scene feel intimate. I wonder if he had Giorgio Morandi in mind. Painting is such a trip, isn't it? It's an ongoing conversation where we all learn from each other, and each painting is a new way of seeing the world.
