Johannes or Lucas van Doetechum's 1601 etching "Stadsplein met een zuilengang, obelisk en een toren" (City Square with a Colonnade, Obelisk, and Tower) depicts an idealized architectural scene. The composition is a classic example of Renaissance perspective, drawing the viewer's eye down the central axis of the square. The elaborate, classical structures, including the soaring tower and the obelisk, are indicative of the humanist ideals of the period, and the detailed architectural features speak to the artist's interest in Roman and Greek antiquity. This etching is housed in the Rijksmuseum.
