About this artwork

Editor: This is an untitled photograph by Lucian and Mary Brown, showing a baby crying in a crib. It strikes me as quite unsettling, almost ghostly. What do you see in this image? Curator: The negative image amplifies the sense of unease. The crying child, isolated within the crib, becomes a potent symbol of vulnerability and primal fear. Consider the wallpaper – a pastoral scene now rendered ominous, a disrupted Eden. What cultural memories does this evoke for you? Editor: I guess it makes me think about the loss of innocence, maybe? Curator: Precisely. The image becomes a stage for anxieties surrounding childhood. The crib, meant to be a safe haven, transforms into a cage. What do you make of the picture hanging on the wall? Editor: It looks like…another baby? Curator: It mirrors the scene, doesn't it? The mirroring effect reinforces the cyclical nature of these anxieties. The child's distress is echoed, becoming timeless. Editor: It's darker than I initially perceived. Thanks for pointing out all the layers!
