"Saint Francis beneath a Tree, Praying", etched by Rembrandt van Rijn in the mid-17th century, offers us a window into the spiritual and social currents of the Dutch Golden Age. Rembrandt, deeply affected by the religious and political upheavals of his time, often explored themes of humility and devotion. This etching presents Saint Francis, a figure known for his renunciation of worldly goods and his profound connection to nature. What might it have meant to him? The choice to depict Saint Francis in such a humble, almost obscured manner, challenges the traditional representations of religious figures. Notice the figure of Christ hanging on the tree, perhaps signifying the weight and suffering, but also the path to empathy and understanding that defines Saint Francis's life. It invites us to contemplate the intersection of faith, nature, and humanity, and to find our own sense of place within the world.

In depicting Francis, Rembrandt did not choose the traditional moment when the saint receives the ‘stigmata’, the wounds of Christ, but rather represented the saint praying right before this extraordinary event. This is an unfinished proof impression executed in drypoint. Only five impressions of this state are known, all on unusual oriental types of paper or costly vellum. This impression is printed on warm yellow Japanese paper.
