Ursula Schulz-Dornburg made this photograph, titled Erevan-Sevan. It’s a gelatin silver print, which is a traditional photographic process. The image features an old, possibly abandoned, structure in a desolate landscape. The rough, weathered texture of the building’s materials—brick, concrete, and metal—speaks to a history of labor and the passage of time. You can almost feel the weight of each brick laid, the coarse texture of the concrete, and the rust on the metal structure, perhaps a sign. The image evokes the slow, manual processes of construction, and it seems equally marked by entropy. It serves as a reminder of the built environment's vulnerability, and the constant tension between human effort and natural decay. Schulz-Dornburg’s work encourages us to look beyond the surface and consider the full cycle of creation, use, and eventual obsolescence.
