Curator: I’m struck immediately by the dynamism. It feels almost precarious, doesn't it? The bronze Equestrian Statue attributed to Leonardo da Vinci around 1519 captures such intense movement. Editor: Precarious is the word! Like a frozen explosion. What's particularly compelling to me is that sense of captured energy. You see so many equestrian statues of figures posed heroically still, almost stoic. But this one suggests the moment before or after some significant action. A surge of power. Curator: Precisely! Da Vinci was fascinated by the symbol of the horse, exploring the themes of power, nobility, and control. Equestrian statues throughout history served to commemorate leaders, usually military leaders or emperors, symbolizing dominion. What could this statue be interpreted to mean, do you think, beyond simply valor? Editor: Hmmm… I'm thinking about the idea of ambition, almost unbridled, suggested by the rearing stance. Also, note how small the rider appears in comparison to the horse. Maybe it's less about dominance and more about the delicate balance between control and raw energy, a human barely guiding an awesome natural force. Curator: That's an interesting interpretation. Consider the fact that, although attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, it is known to be modeled after his earlier drawings and studies of horses. Some historians believe it could have been completed by one of his students after his death. Knowing this, would this change your idea about the scale relationship between horse and rider? Editor: Intriguing. The student inheriting Leonardo's unfinished ambition... the large shadow the master casts… It changes the meaning, yes. This then reads more like a work striving for –but not quite achieving— grandiosity. Perhaps expressing a poignant, self-conscious reach for greatness? Curator: Perhaps. In either case, looking at this, at the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts, in its Italian Renaissance context – this magnificent work sparks our reflections even today about what exactly symbolizes, not just physical, but internal power, what lies latent, unrealized. Editor: And, dare I say, makes you want to finally get back to those unfinished projects cluttering your desk!
